Abstract

By analogy with covalent polymers, a supramolecular polymer can be defined as a macromolecule in which the monomeric units are held together by non-covalent interactions. The presence in the self-assembling units of -conjugated systems can yield emissive aggregated species with optical properties other than the monomeric species. Furthermore, the decoration of such -conjugated systems with elements of asymmetry affords chiral, supramolecular polymers holding potential applicability as chiroptical materials in different areas like circularly polarized emission or spin filtering. Herein, relevant examples from our research group of these chiral, supramolecular aggregates will be presented

Short biography:

Professor Luis Sánchez studied the degree in Chemistry at the Universidad Castilla La Mancha and obtained his PhD in 1997 at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) under the supervision of Prof. C. Seoane and N. Martín. From 1999 to 2000 he carried out a postdoctoral stay with Prof. J. C. Hummelen at the RijksUniversiteit Groningen (The Netherlands). From 1998 to 2002 he worked as assistant professor in the Department of Organic Chemistry, Faculty of Chemical Sciences, UCM. Since 2002, he worked as associate professor in this Department until 2017. In October 2017, he got his full professorship in the same department. Since 2008, he coordinates a research group on Supramolecular Polymers working on the development of new functional supramolecular materials. He is coauthor of more tan 150 research articles, has supervised 10 PhD thesis in synthetic and supramolecular chemistry and he is the PI of different research projects. He was awarded with the Ignacio Ribas Medal 2020 by the Specialized group in Organic Chemistry of RSEQ. As far as academic management is concerned, he is one of the Vice Deans of the Faculty of Chemistry of the UCM (2014-to date).
